Mentorship

When I was a BCBA trainee I felt like I was not receiving the best supervision that I could.

Some context: The supervisors were passive aggressive, i felt stuck, there were ethical concerns, there was no structure, and my needs were not being met. This was not what I expected.

I searched for a mentor and she helped me by assessing my personal circumstances, my goals and the actions that needed to be taken to create change.

I left that company, I got all my monthly fieldwork verification forms signed, my personal life improved, i learned more, earned more and grew more at a different company. Everything worked out and it’s all thanks to my mentor.

When I became a BCBA I came across a lot of situations that your supervision experience does not typically train you for…

Examples: Replying to hostile emails, parents mistreating staff, setting boundaries, supervising defensive/unreceptive personalities, collaborating with unreceptive providers, or caregivers taking over sessions and coaching staff.

I reached out to a mentor and met with her on a weekly basis.

I found this time with my mentor to be invaluable and it aligned with my needs and values. She understood what I was going through, she could relate and she had great suggestions and a different outlook on how I was viewing certain situations. I became a better BCBA with her support.
